Optical Systems Technology's Star-Tron® Star-Tron 170 mm lens is Optical Systems Technology's ultra-compact, lightweight, long-range nighttime passive surveillance lens for use with the Gen-II or Gen-III MK-880 series pocketscope, the AN/PVS-7 goggles, or the AN/PVS-4 battery housing and ocular with a 25 mm format Gen-II or Gen-III image intensifier.  When equipped with the universal focusing accessory, the lens attaches to the MK-880 Night Vision PocketScope™ or the AN/PVS-7 goggles simply by unscrewing the 1 X objective from the PocketScope™ or goggles (and attaching a tube retainer piece onto the goggles) and screwing the unit onto the lens.  The system is either hand-held or it mounts on a tiny tripod or upon any standard tripod-type interface.  It is aimed by hand and viewed from the rear using the PocketScope™ eyepiece.  It is adaptable to video and SLR cameras as well.  The system magnification is 6.5x when used with the standard 26.5 mm ocular.

LENS SYSTEM:  Optical Systems Technology's Star-Tron® 170 mm focal length, T-1.9 catadioptric objective lens, is intended for passive night-vision use.  The optical design is a fast f/1.4 in a package with a total length of only 140 mm and a weight of less than 2.8 pounds.  The design exhibits low chromatic aberration, and provides crisp imagery over its full 450-910 nm (extended blue) operating range.  It is compatible with both 2nd and 3rd generation intensifiers.

New multilayer antireflection coatings yield better than 99.4% average transmission through each lens element, and are extremely resistant to scratches and stains.  Stray light testing has led to the development of a high-performance internal baffling system for the 170 mm lens.  This system uses a combination of diffusing surfaces, antireflection threads, and oven-cured antireflective paint to suppress glare from bright lights within and outside of the field of view.

Vacuum and immersion testing were used to refine the sealing and produce a dry-nitrogen-purged lens, environmentally sealed and designed and tested to withstand water immersion to a depth of 3 feet.  Ports are included for the user to purge the lens as well.

MOUNTING SYSTEM:  The 170 mm lens is either hand-held, tripod-mounted, or used with a custom low-profile tripod.
